The Fredericksburg Independent School District (FISD) Education Foundation’s annual fundraising campaign is under way.
The goals for this year’s campaign are two-fold. First, this year’s target is $250,000. And second, the foundation wants to continue to raise awareness in the community as to what is needed for FISD to achieve academic excellence.
Founded in 2018 by a group of local business, community and educational leaders, the FISD Education Foundation serves as the independent fundraising arm of the school district.
In September 2023, the foundation distributed almost $137,000 across all the FISD campuses to fulfill teacher grant requests. In its five years of existence, the foundation has given over $600,000 to teachers and campuses.
The foundation does this to help alleviate shortfalls tied to a funding gap created by the Texas recapture (or Robin Hood) effort that requires some school districts (like Fredericksburg) to give back part of their school tax funds to the state. This year, approximately 42% of FISD school taxes or $26 million is being recaptured. This works out to an impact of about $8,250 per student in FISD.
“Meeting the needs of our schools and our community is an ever-increasing challenge,” said Leslie Immel Krieg, foundation president. “While we do not see a fix in sight for the structure of school funding in Texas, the FISD Education Foundation does see how we can help close the gap in funding in our own schools and help achieve academic excellence.”
